How To Enable Auto Login Under Ubuntu 12.04/11.10

In this tutorial we will see how to make Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) and Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) start automatically without the need to enter your user password. We will see how to do this using two methods and it's your choice to choose one of them.

Method 1 (Easy)

Open the Dash and search for "user accounts":

Select your username, click the "Unlock" button and enter your user password, then turn on the "Automatic Login" option:

Method 2 (Advanced)

To enable auto login under Ubuntu 12.04/11.10, we need to edit this file:

sudo gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

Add now this new line by replacing the text highlighted in red with your own username:

autologin-user=USERNAME

Press Ctrl+Q and save your file.

From now on, the session will start automatically with no need for entering your login credentials.
